Festa des Vermar 2025, Binissalem

Mid September 2025

Every September, the town of Binissalem in Mallorca bursts into life with the Festa des Vermar, a festival that celebrates the grape harvest and the community’s deep winemaking traditions. While the modern festival dates back to 1971, Binissalem’s connection to viticulture goes back centuries. The town sits in the heart of Mallorca’s Raiguer region, known for its Denominación de Origen (D.O.) Binissalem wines, especially those made from the indigenous Manto Negro grape.

The Festa des Vermar is not only a party; it is a living tribute to the people’s close relationship with the land, vines, and the craft of winemaking.

What to Expect in 2025

The 2025 Festa des Vermar will take place over three vibrant weekends in September, culminating in the final celebrations at the end of the month. Visitors can expect a mix of tradition, playfulness, food, and of course, plenty of wine.

Opening Weekend

  • Boot-racing competitions, cultural tours, and art exhibitions set the tone for the celebrations.

  • Locals dress in traditional costumes, filling the streets with a festive atmosphere.

Second Weekend

  • The proclamation is read aloud, marking the formal opening of the harvest festivities.

  • The legendary grape-throwing battle unfolds, where participants joyfully hurl grapes at one another in a playful harvest frenzy.

  • A grape-stomping contest takes place in the town square, with barefoot competitors racing to squeeze out juice to the rhythm of music.

  • The community gathers for a traditional meal of fideus de vermar—a hearty noodle dish cooked with lamb, pork sausages, and a generous splash of local red wine.

Third Weekend

  • The festival culminates with a grand parade of floats, traditional dances, and music, filling the streets with colour and creativity.

  • The Fira del Vi (Wine Fair) invites visitors to sample wines from Binissalem’s renowned bodegas, showcasing the very best of local craftsmanship.

Beyond the Festival

Throughout the celebrations, visitors can explore wine routes, visit local bodegas, and learn about the art of Mallorcan winemaking. Many wineries open their doors for tastings, offering a chance to savour the island’s distinctive wines while connecting with the people who make them.

Note: Dates and programs are subject to change. Check the municipal calendar or the official municipal website (Ajuntament) for each event before attending.
