The Festes del Rei en Jaume | King James Festival, Santa Ponsa

23 August - 12 September 2025

The Festes del Rei en Jaume honours King James I of Aragon—Jaume I the Conqueror—and his pivotal landing on Mallorca’s shores in the early hours of 10 September 1229, marking the beginning of the Christian reconquest of the island from Moorish rule. The town of Santa Ponsa celebrates this historic arrival with dramatic flair every early September.

The festivities kick off with a proclamation at the cross of Santa Ponsa, followed by a floral tribute by local authorities. The event is marked by the presentation of banners to the leaders of the various participating groups, each banner representing historical murals found in books and museums. One of the festival’s highlights is the “Nit del Foc” (Night of Fire), where medieval streets are lit by torches and fireworks, creating a spectacular and almost otherworldly atmosphere.

As the festivities unfold, a Saracen camp is set up on the beach, featuring traditional tents and a lively parade, enhancing the historical ambiance. The centrepiece of the festival is the series of battle re-enactments. The first battle takes place at the Creu de Santa Pon.a, where Jaume I’s troops symbolically land.

The second battle occurs at Cal. d’en Pellicer, leading to the final and most significant clash on the beach of Santa Pon.a, where the defeat of the Saracen king Abū Yahya is re-enacted, symbolising the Christian victory. Alongside the re-enactments, the festival includes cultural events, sports, traditional music, dances, and communal dinners, creating a family-friendly environment and a strong sense of community.
