L’Assumpció de la Mare de Déu | The Assumption of Virgin Mary, Mallorca

Palma & others - 15 August 2025

By Claire Miller

The festival of L’Assumpció de la Mare de Déu, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is one of Mallorca’s most cherished summer traditions, blending centuries-old religious reverence with local artistry and community spirit.

Celebrated each year on 15 August, the Assumption honours the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up, body and soul, into Heaven at the end of her earthly life, a story rooted in early Christian tradition and local devotion. In Mallorca, this ritual dates back to the 14th century, when the custom of the “Llits de la Mare de Déu” (beds of the Virgin Mary) was established.

These ornate, temporary platforms display a reclining statue of the Virgin, symbolising her Dormition and ascent, creating a moving tableau of faith and visual splendour.

What to Expect in 2025

Island-wide Exhibitions of the Divine
In 2025, Mallorca will host a record 23 churches in Palma exhibiting these sacred beds and many more across the island from villages like Sineu, Biniali, Esporles, Valldemossa, and Campos. Visitors can expect newly restored or added installations in places such as Capdepera, Lloret de Vistalegre, and Llucmajor.

Centrepiece Events
At La Seu, the Cathedral of Mallorca in Palma, a particularly revered Dormition bed is displayed. The programme includes:

  • 14 August, 8 pm: Vigil of the Dormition - the transfer of the statue from the altar to the bed, accompanied by hymns.

  • 15 August: Multiple Masses at 10:30 am, 12 pm and 7 pm, accompanied by the Cathedral Choir.

  • The Bed of the Virgin will remain on display from 15 to 22 August, with visiting hours Monday to Friday: 10 am–5 pm; Saturdays: 10 am–1:30 pm and 6:30–8 pm; Sundays: 9:30 am–1 pm and 6:30–8 pm.

Beyond Religious Ceremony

Although deeply spiritual, the festival is also a celebration. Traditional music, local choral performances, and folk dances enliven church squares and village plazas. Artisan fairs, children’s workshops, and live concerts make it a family-friendly event in towns such as Sencelles, Caimari, Cala d’Or, Colònia de Sant Pere, Sa Coma, and Son Serra de Marina. Arts and culture mix with devotion, creating an experience that draws both locals and visitors.
