Can Lluc Agrotourism, Ibiza

All season luxury
in the Heart of Ibiza

Over the last few years, travellers are increasingly swapping hotels for agritourismos, as they seek intimate, rustic idylls immersed in nature and fuss-free locavore dining. But these farm stays are far from basic. Agritourism in 2024 offers a refined experience, blending stylish, upscale interiors with organic, farm-fresh meals and locally sourced wines. What was once seen as a back-to-basics escape now includes luxury design and elegant touches, all while maintaining a deep connection to the land.

Just 20 minutes from the airport and port, and only 15 minutes from some of the island’s finest beaches, Can Lluc is perfectly connected. Tucked just outside the quaint town of San Rafael, a winding road leads you through the serene valley, and as you arrive, the air fills with the scent of pine, olive, and fig trees.

The accommodations are as diverse as they are inviting. Around the main building, twelve charming double rooms offer intimacy and comfort, each with its own private terrace where you can sit in the fading evening light with a glass of wine. Some of these accommodations remain open year-round and feature cozy wood burners, making Ibiza the perfect winter destination.

Further down the path, ten newly built apartments are scattered across the property, offering an added layer of privacy. Some come with private pools, perfect for a romantic escape, while others are designed for families or groups who want to experience the serenity of Can Lluc together. Lucas’ keen eye for minimalist design, praised by leading influencers, seamlessly enhances the rustic atmosphere of the spaces. His use of natural materials shines through, featuring original elements like drystone walls, ceilings crafted from Sabina wood, and roofing made from a local variety of juniper.

For those seeking an even more secluded retreat, and a more modern minimalistic feel, there are two larger villas, Can Jaume Curt and Can Prats, tucked away from the main hotel and with views far and wide. These villas retain the same rustic charm, with whitewashed walls and wooden beams, but are equipped with every modern convenience and ooze balearic luxury. The deluxe-suite Villas, which sit high up with views across the valley include private infinity pools and baths big enough for two.  Whether you’re lounging in your private garden or enjoying a quiet evening indoors, these spaces invite you to completely unwind,  and reconnect with nature, —and each other.

At the heart of Can Lluc’s journey is Lucas Prats, the visionary behind its transformation. In this interview, Lucas shares the story of Can Lluc’s evolution, his family’s deep-rooted values, and the sustainable practices that shape the guest experience at this unique escape.

Can you share the history of Can Lluc and how it evolved from a family farmhouse into the agrotourism destination it is today?

From a young age, I had a passion for the hospitality business, which led me to pursue studies in law and economics. After working with a large hotel group, I inherited a portion of my family’s farm following my grandfather’s passing. The finca was in need of restoration, and I saw an opportunity to create something special. Over four years, we restored the old farmhouse and transformed it into the agrotourism hotel it is today. The goal was to offer guests a space where they could experience life at a slower pace, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of Ibiza.

What inspired you to embrace agrotourism, and how does it reflect the values of your family and heritage?

Our decision to create an agrotourism resort was deeply rooted in our desire to restore and preserve the finca for future generations. We wanted to conserve the natural surroundings, including the stone walls, forests, and the old lime kiln, which was used to prepare the material for painting the houses. This commitment to heritage preservation allows our guests to enjoy a piece of family history while exploring the beautiful trails and views of San Antonio Bay.

How do you incorporate sustainable practices into the operations of Can Lluc, and why is this important to you?

Sustainability has always been a priority. We’ve integrated several eco-friendly systems, such as air conditioning disconnectors, water flow reducers, and biological filters for wastewater. Our pools use natural chlorine made from salt sourced from the Salinas of Ibiza, and solar panels provide hot water for the restaurant and villas. We’ve eliminated plastic bottles and offer km-zero water to our guests. These initiatives reflect our deep respect for the environment and our desire to reduce our impact as much as possible.

How do the natural surroundings and local culture of Ibiza influence the guest experience at Can Lluc?

Our guests love the natural beauty of the finca and the valley that surrounds it. We encourage them to explore Ibiza beyond the beaches—visiting local museums, churches, and villages, and sampling the extraordinary local gastronomy. These experiences enrich their stay and offer a more authentic connection to the island’s culture.

What is your vision for the future of Can Lluc, and how do you hope to develop the property while preserving its authenticity?

We’re focused on extending our season and attracting more guests, particularly during the quieter winter months, when Ibiza’s natural beauty really shines. Sustainability will continue to be a key focus, and we hope to expand our agricultural efforts by planting more olive trees and creating a vegetable garden. With the involvement of my daughters, who are studying hotel and restaurant management, we look forward to growing Can Lluc while preserving the essence of our family and heritage.

Can you describe some unique experiences that highlight the agrotourism aspect of your hotel?

While it can be challenging to involve guests in agricultural activities, we bring the local farm-to-table experience to them. Our guests can enjoy products from neighboring farms, such as cheese and sausages, and we offer hiking and cycling routes through the finca, which boast stunning views over San Antonio Bay. In both summer and winter, we recommend local restaurants that showcase the best of Ibizan cuisine, creating a truly exceptional experience for our guests.
