Festes de la Beata Santa Catalina Tomás 2025 | La Beata Festival 2025, Valldemossa

28 July 2025

By Claire Miller

Each July, the tranquil mountain village of Valldemossa on the island of Mallorca transforms into a vibrant scene of faith, music, and community as it celebrates one of the Balearic Islands’ most beloved figures—Santa Catalina Tomás, known affectionately as La Beata. This annual festival, held on 28 July, is a unique blend of solemn religious observance and joyful local tradition.

Born in Valldemossa in 1531, Catalina Tomás came from humble beginnings. Orphaned at a young age, she later joined the Augustinian convent in Palma, where she became known for her deep spirituality and visions. She died in 1574 and was beatified in 1792, later canonized in 1930—becoming the first native saint of the Balearic Islands. Her story continues to resonate with the people of Mallorca, and nowhere is this more evident than during the annual celebration in her hometown.

A Festival Steeped in Tradition

The Festes de la Beata has grown from local devotion into one of the most cherished festivals on the island. Rooted in centuries-old customs, the centrepiece of the celebration is the Triumphal Carriage Parade, first introduced in 1903. A young girl, chosen from the village to represent the saint as "La Beateta," leads a procession through the streets on a floral-decorated carriage, accompanied by attendants dressed as angels and traditional figures.

The Procession of the Relic, held earlier in the day, is a more solemn and spiritual event. Residents walk the streets carrying a relic of the saint, accompanied by prayers, hymns, and traditional Mallorcan instruments like the xeremiers (bagpipers).

Participants wear traditional attire—linen shirts, vests, bonnets, and aprons—adding authenticity and cultural richness to the occasion. Music and folk dancing spill into the streets, and village squares become open-air stages for community celebration.

What to Expect in 2025

In 2025, the festival is set to continue its mix of tradition and evolving cultural programming. Visitors can expect:

  • Week-long celebrations: In the days leading up to 28 July, Valldemossa will host cultural performances, artisan fairs, and family-friendly events.

  • Gastronomic experiences: Local specialties such as coca de patata (a light, potato bun) will be available from local bakeries and festival stalls—often enjoyed with almond ice cream or hot chocolate.

  • Cultural pairings: The festival coincides with other summer events like Artdemossa and classical music concerts in nearby Deià and Palma, allowing visitors to enjoy a broader cultural experience.

  • Extended programming: Newer additions may include guided tours, exhibitions about Santa Catalina’s life, and youth competitions that celebrate traditional dress and customs.

For Visitors Planning to Attend

If you're visiting Mallorca in late July 2025, Valldemossa offers an exceptional glimpse into Mallorcan spirituality and heritage. Here's how to make the most of your visit:

  • Arrive early: Festival activities begin mid-July and build up to the main day on 28 July. Book accommodations in advance, as Valldemossa is a popular summer destination.

  • Where to watch: The evening parade typically winds through the village centre, including Plaça de la Cartoixa and Carrer de la Rectoria. Arrive early to find a good viewing spot.

  • What to wear: While traditional attire is worn by participants, casual summer dress is suitable for visitors. Be prepared for warm evenings and plenty of walking.

The Festes de la Beata is more than a festival—it is an expression of local identity, spiritual devotion, and cultural continuity. It brings generations together in a shared celebration of a woman whose life of humility and service continues to inspire centuries later.
