Nestled in the picturesque Tramuntana mountain range, Valldemossa is one of Mallorca's most enchanting villages. Known for its cobbled streets, charming stone houses adorned with vibrant flower pots, and stunning mountain views, Valldemossa is a must-visit destination for travellers seeking history, culture, and natural beauty.

Geographical Facts

Valldemossa is located about 17 km northwest of Palma, the capital of Mallorca. It sits at an elevation of approximately 400 metres above sea level, surrounded by lush, terraced hillsides. The village's high-altitude position offers panoramic views of the Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its close proximity to the coast allows for a short drive to the serene Port de Valldemossa, a small, rocky cove perfect for a peaceful escape.

A Glimpse into History

Valldemossa has a rich history dating back to the 13th century when King James II built a palace for his son, Sancho, who suffered from asthma. The mountain air was believed to be beneficial for his health. This palace later became the Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa, a monastery that housed Carthusian monks until 1835. The village gained international fame when Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and French writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838-1839 in the monastery. Sand’s book, A Winter in Majorca, describes their time in Valldemossa and immortalizes the village's serene beauty.
