January might be the heart of winter, but in Mallorca, the month comes to life with local festivals that blend ancient traditions and local modern community. These celebrations offer a unique insight into the island’s culture. Here’s a guide to the most significant festivals you can experience in Mallorca this January.

Sant Antoni

Sant Antoni celebrated on January 16th and 17th, is one of Mallorca’s most anticipated festivals. Rooted in ancient traditions and later adapted to honour the patron saint of animals, this festival showcases the island’s fiery spirit.

Key Highlights:

  • Dimonis (Demons): Costumed performers roam the streets, representing mischievous spirits. Their fiery antics, accompanied by traditional drumming, create an electric atmosphere.

  • Foguerons (Bonfires): Town squares and streets light up with bonfires where locals gather to grill sausages, drink wine, and celebrate.

  • Beneïdes d’animals (Blessing of Animals): On January 17th, pets and livestock are brought to church to receive blessings, a charming sight for animal lovers.

  • Pujada al Pi: In both Pollença and Puerto de Pollença, the tradition of "Pujada al Pi" (Raising of the Pine) sees locals transport and erect a large pine tree trunk in the town square. There is then a competition (amongst those who dare!) to see who can climb to the top of the tree trunk. This cherished tradition, often accompanied by music and cheers, is a highlight of the celebration and the festivities can last well into the night.

Where to Go: Sant Antoni is the patron saint of Sa Pobla in North Mallorca, and as such the town holds the biggest and best celebrations on the island. The spectacular `Espectacle Piromusical’  fireworks display on the night of the 16th is a must-see, people come from far and wide to see the show, buses and trains even run special schedules in order to make sure people in surrounding areas can take part in the fun. Don’t miss it! More on Sant Antoni in Sa Pobla here.

Sant Sebastià: Palma’s Patron Saint

Just as the embers of Sant Antoni die down, Palma ignites with the festivities of Sant Sebastià, the city’s patron saint. Celebrations run from mid-January to January 25th, culminating in a grand display on the saint’s feast day.

Key Highlights:

  • Live Music: The city’s plazas become stages for diverse musical performances, ranging from traditional Mallorcan music to modern genres.

  • Correfocs: Fire runs featuring costumed devils and pyrotechnics bring a thrilling end to the festivities.

  • Gastronomy: Food stalls and pop-up bars line the streets, offering local delicacies like sobrassada and ensaïmada.

Where to Go: The main events take place in Palma’s central squares, including Plaça Major and Plaça de Cort.
