Noche de San Juan - June 23rd
On the night of June 23rd, Palma becomes the epicentre of the Sant Joan festivities. As the shortest night of the year, the Nit de Sant Joan is celebrated with fervour across the Mediterranean, and Mallorca’s celebration is particularly remarkable.
Highlights of the Night:
-
Workshops and Activities: From the early evening, the Parc de la Mar under the imposing Cathedral hosts a variety of workshops and activities for children, along with traditional dances that set the festive tone.
-
Correfoc: At around 11 PM, the much-anticipated correfoc begins. This fiery event sees groups of devils, known as colles de dimonis, parading through the park, wielding large poles that emit showers of sparks. Accompanying them are the legendary dragons of Sant Jordi and the Drac de Na Coca, adding to the mystical atmosphere. Spectators can choose to dodge the flying embers or dance amidst the sparks, creating an electrifying and somewhat chaotic scene.
-
Bonfires and Drumming: Throughout the park, small bonfires add to the haze and colour of the festival, while the rhythmic drumming of the batucada, a form of samba, makes the entire city vibrate with energy.
-
Midnight Rituals: As midnight approaches, participants head to nearby beaches for a traditional purifying bath in the sea. This ritual is believed to cleanse the past year's negativity and make wishes for the year ahead.
Dia de San Juan - June 24th
The festivities continue on with a more relaxed yet equally enjoyable celebration.
Highlights of the Day:
-
Musical Fair: The beach of Palma hosts a musical fair featuring live music performances that invite everyone to dance and celebrate by the sea. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the lingering spirit of the festival with friends and family.
Island-Wide Celebrations:
While Palma hosts the grandest celebrations, the spirit of Sant Joan is felt across Mallorca. Towns hold their own festivities, each adding a local twist to the traditional celebrations.

Beach Gatherings: Across the island, people set up camp on various beaches and coves. Under the flickering light of hundreds of candles, families and friends gather for picnics and barbecues. Music fills the air, and children play in excitement, waiting for the magical moment at midnight.
-
Midnight Swim: At the stroke of midnight, everyone runs into the sea en masse. Tradition suggests that one should bathe on their back, looking up with a candle in hand to make a wish, though in the excitement, this is often overlooked.
