Three Kings - Los Reyes Magos Celebrations in Mallorca

Three Kings Celebrations 2025 in Mallorca

As the holiday season draws to a close, Mallorca saves its most enchanting celebration for last: Los Reyes Magos (The Three Kings). Marking Epiphany on January 6th, this cherished Spanish tradition brings the festive spirit alive with dazzling parades, heartfelt family gatherings, and an abundance of sweets. Here’s your guide to experiencing the magic of the Three Kings celebrations on this beautiful island.

1. The Arrival of the Kings

On the evening of January 5th, the island’s towns and villages come alive with the arrival of the Three Kings. Known as the Cabalgata de Reyes, these parades are a highlight of the holiday season, featuring colourful floats and live music.

  • Palma’s Grand Parade: The capital city hosts Mallorca's most elaborate Cabalgata. Starting at Moll Vell, the kings arrive by boat, symbolising their long journey from the East. They are greeted by thousands of spectators before parading through Palma’s streets on magnificent floats. Accompanied by performers, dancers, and marching bands, the procession culminates in Plaza de Cort, where the Kings address the crowd and distribute sweets.

  • Sóller and Port de Sóller: In these picturesque towns, the Kings make a dramatic entrance by boat into the port, a unique spectacle against the backdrop of the mountains.

  • Alcúdia and Pollença: These northern towns offer charming, smaller-scale parades perfect for families seeking a more intimate celebration.

2. The Sweet Tradition of Roscones

No Three Kings celebration is complete without indulging in a Roscón de Reyes, a ring-shaped cake adorned with candied fruits and powdered sugar. Hidden inside are two surprises: a small figurine of a king and a bean. Tradition dictates that whoever finds the figurine becomes "king" for the day, while the unlucky bean-finder buys next year’s Roscón. Mallorca’s bakeries and patisseries compete to create the most beautiful and delicious versions of this festive treat. Pair it with a hot chocolate a la taza for the ultimate festive indulgence.

3. Gift-Giving and Family Gatherings

For many Mallorcans, January 6th, Día de los Reyes Magos, is the main day for exchanging gifts. The Three Kings are believed to bring presents to children, much like Santa Claus. Families gather to enjoy a festive lunch, often featuring traditional Mallorcan dishes like lechona al horno (roast suckling pig) or arroz brut (a hearty rice stew).

4. Religious Ceremonies and Cultural Traditions

As a religious occasion, Epiphany is also marked by masses and processions. Many churches across the island host special services, celebrating the arrival of the Magi and their gifts for the Christ child.  The day often includes traditional cants dels reis (songs of the kings), where local choirs and musicians perform age-old carols.

5. Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Arrive Early: Parades are incredibly popular, so arrive early to secure a good viewing spot, especially in larger towns.

  • Mind the Sweets: Thousands of candies are thrown from the floats—bring a bag to collect them or be prepared to dodge flying treats!

  • Dress Warmly: While Mallorca enjoys mild winters, January evenings can be chilly. Wear layers to stay comfortable as you enjoy the outdoor festivities.

The Three Kings celebrations in Mallorca offer a magical conclusion to the festive season. Whether you’re marvelling at the parades, savouring a slice of Roscón, or sharing in the warmth of a family gathering, this cherished holiday is a memorable experience for all.

¡Feliz Día de los Reyes Magos!
